BUSINESS EXPERIENCE:
Vice President – ECDC Logistics – June 1993 to November 2007: A wholly-owned division of Allied Waste Industries, a rail logistics company moving an average of 6,000 tons per day of waste materials, with annual revenues exceeding $75 million and $40 million in rail assets. Guided ECDC Logistics from zero cars and containers in 1997 to over 1500 railcars serving six transfer stations and nine rail accessible landfills. Provided seven consecutive years of increasing revenue and profit growth. Primary Job Functions: Senior manager responsible for all day-to-day functions of the company. Handled the Municipal Solid Waste, Construction and Demolition Debris, and Contaminated Soils major commodities. Spent three out of four weeks every month commuting to the east coast to meet the needs of the company. Duties include: Marketing: Managed the Allied/ECDC Sales Team, consisting of 5 field representatives serving the Northeast waste markets. Secured contracts with major corporations including DuPont, Dow Chemical Company, Hugo Neu Corporation, and others to increase volume and profits to Allied’s rail-served landfills. Fleet Management: Managed the daily loading needs of Allied’s Transfer Stations by the proper dispatching and tracking of Allied’s 1500 railcar fleet, consisting of woodchip cars, coal cars, mill gondolas, six position, four position and three position intermodal flat cars. Equipment Leasing: Managed the annual equipment budget exceeding $18 million. Negotiated long and short-term car and container leases dealing with major banks and leasing companies. Equipment Maintenance: Organized and implemented maintenance, reporting programs and facilities for Allied’s 1500 railcar fleet and 5,000 containers saving the company $500,000 annually. Rail Contract Negotiations: Negotiated and managed railroad contracts for the movement of waste materials with annual freight bill expenses exceeding $25 million. P&L Statement and Budget Responsibility: Administered ECDC’s Profit and Loss statements and established annual budget reviews with other Allied divisions. Coordinated expense tracking and reporting. Intra-company Reporting: Provided reports and directed information flow to all affected company divisions, including daily loading and unloading reports, railcar forecasts, and tonnage reports. People Management: Directed five-person office staff in Salt Lake City plus various direct and indirect reports for field services such as intermodal yard operations, landfill operations, railcar inspections, and repairs. Software Development: Led an Allied team with a major software developer to design and implement a web-based logistics program specific to the needs of Allied Waste. The program eliminated redundancy and provided significant management tools for our office and field operations.
Consultant Services: Supplied a rail consultant service to Allied’s West Coast region including the rail divisions in Utah, California and Washington State. Senior Manager – Environmental Wastes Marketing – Southern Pacific Transportation Company – August 1977 to June 1993: Joined the company in the Engineering Department. Within a year, accepted an opportunity in the Business Development Department and, subsequently, served in a succession of increasing responsible positions including, District Sales Manager, New York City, and Senior Manager Environmental Wastes Marketing, Houston, TX. As Senior Manager, Environmental Waste Marketing, was accountable for comprehensive Municipal Solid Waste marketing effort. Also served as a Quality Process Improvement Trainer from 1990 to 1991.
MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS New York City (Staten Island) 20-year Transportation and Disposal Contract: Part of a five-person team that responded to the city’s Request For Proposal (RFP), and was then chosen to negotiate the final agreement. Over two years of work culminated in the award of a 20-year contract with one 10-year extension, for the annual movement of 250,000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) from the Staten Island Transfer Station via rail to Allied’s Lee County Landfill in Bishopville, SC. This contract is worth over $25 million per year to Allied Waste and is the single largest contract awarded in the company’s history. Rail Rate Negotiations: Initiated a 3-member team within ECDC Logistics to negotiate a rate reduction with a major eastern rail carrier, saving the company $3.8 million over the 3-year term of the agreement. Company Growth: Refined a Southern Pacific Transportation Company pricing and market development plan that resulted in significantly increased volumes and buoyed annual projected revenues to exceed $100 million.
